IT ALL STARTED WHEN....
2006 - 2008
We moved from Bristol in 2001 and by 2006 our love and passion for art manifested in Red Propeller opening a gallery space in the Shambles, the oldest, most beautiful building in Kingsbridge,
Our launch show featured 3 local artists, James Stewart, Louise Dear and notably Lucianne Lassalle whose lifesize, pink, latex David established Red Propeller as a destination gallery pretty much straight away!
2008 - 2014
We built a website which had little traffic until a genius PR stunt involving selling a Banksy with the house it was attached to being thrown in for free. This generated massive publicity worldwide (honest!) for the gallery and put us firmly on the map. Our first online order was from Japan and orders flooded in from around the globe! We couldn’t believe it.
Seriously riding the limited edition print boom online which was created by the Banksy print phenomena, we decided to close doors and move to a large barn concentrating our time to our expanding online business and welcoming visitors by appointment. With landmark shows such as ‘Always the Son’ by Russ Mills aka Byroglyphics, ‘Maid to Please’ by TRXTR and ‘Sense of Soul & Self’ by Jane Macartney the studios became an established destination.
With our international reputation growing we took things further afield having satellite shows such as Guy Denning’s sellout ‘Behemoth’ at St Martin in the Field, London, which was a triumph alongside, regular group shows showcasing our artists in über cool Vyner Street, London and collaborations with Carmichael Gallery in Los Angeles, Brooklynite Gallery in New York and Get Up Gallery in Las Vegas.
2014 - 2022 & Beyond
However, after a few years Limited Edition Print mania cooled off and we missed the hanging of art on the walls, meeting people, sharing the joy and showcasing a dynamic ever changing window of art on the high street - so with our studios hidden away in a beautiful, rural idyll we decided to reopen in Kingsbridge in 20014.
We welcomed Tom McMahon to the team in 2020 just after the first lockdown - it’s a passion and in the tail end (hopefully) of a worldwide pandemic it felt like a great time for Red Propeller to be contributing to the rebirth of the high street.
2023
Still going strong - back in the beautiful, rural idyll - online & open by appointment - come visit - real art for unreal times!
